A powerful inhibitor leached from intact chrysanthemum plants completely masked the promotive effects of gibberellins in the bioassay systems. Apparently this inhibitor was a phenolic compound that completely inhibited lettuce seed germination and partially inhibited growth of intact chrysanthemum plants. Other inhibitors are leached from plants and are involved in allelopathy.
