Another reason for the variety one sees in chord names arises from differing traditions. When doing Roman numeral analysis, one uses a tradition of describing inversion derived from the keyboard shorthand of early 18th Century Europe! Chord names in Jazz and Popular charts do not use this convention, but have their own, different conventions.
